The Life-Saving Power of Vaccines: Why They Are Safe and Effective

Under assault by RFK Jr. and the Trump administration, let's revisit the safety and efficacy of vaccines

Vaccines are among the most impactful public health innovations in human history. They have eradicated deadly diseases, saved millions of lives, and continue to protect people around the globe.

Two diseases have been completely eradicated by vaccines: smallpox and rinderpest. Other diseases that could be eradicated by vaccines include Measles, Hepatitis B, Mumps, Rubella, and Disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b.

One of the most remarkable examples of vaccine success is the polio vaccine, which has played a pivotal role in nearly eliminating a disease that once caused widespread fear and suffering. Mitch McConnell had polio as a child and yesterday defended vaccines in a clear rebuke to RFK Jr.

Vaccines train the immune system to recognize and fight harmful pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria. They typically contain a weakened or inactivated form of the pathogen, or even just a small part of it (like a protein). When vaccinated, the human body mounts an immune response by producing antibodies. This process creates a "memory" in the immune system, enabling it to respond more effectively if exposed to the actual disease in the future.

The idea that this process is somehow harmful or dangerous is completely unfounded, but rooted in the knowledge that people sometimes suffer symptoms after being vaccinated. This is due to the response of the immune system combating the pathogen.

There can also be an allergic response to vaccination, but these rarely occur.

Rigorous testing and monitoring ensure that vaccines are safe for widespread use. Here’s how the process works:

  • Preclinical Trials: Vaccines are first tested in laboratories and on animals to evaluate safety and efficacy.

  • Clinical Trials: These trials occur in three phases, involving thousands of volunteers, to assess how well the vaccine works and identify any potential side effects.

  • Regulatory Approval: Health organizations, such as the FDA and WHO, review the data thoroughly before approving a vaccine for public use.

  • Post-Approval Monitoring: Even after approval, vaccines undergo continuous monitoring to ensure safety over time.

Side effects from vaccines are typically mild, such as soreness at the injection site or a low-grade fever. As stated previously, serious adverse reactions are exceedingly rare and carefully tracked.

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a viral disease that primarily affects children that can lead to paralysis or death.

In the early 20th century, polio outbreaks caused widespread panic, with thousands of children left paralyzed each year. The introduction of the polio vaccine in the 1950s changed the course of history and saved countless children from needless suffering.

The inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), developed by Dr. Jonas Salk, was introduced in 1955. This vaccine effectively prevented polio without causing the disease.

In 1961, Dr. Albert Sabin’s oral polio vaccine (OPV) made mass immunization campaigns easier and more accessible. Since then, global initiatives like the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) have reduced polio cases by over 99%.

Estimates vary, but polio vaccines have prevented roughly 18 million cases of paralysis and saved hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide.

Today, polio remains endemic in only two countries—Afghanistan and Pakistan—and global efforts continue to achieve total eradication.

The success of the polio vaccine is only one example of how vaccines protect individuals and communities. Vaccines have:

  • Eradicated smallpox, a disease that killed millions annually

  • Dramatically reduced measles, rubella, and diphtheria cases

  • Prevented severe complications from HPV, especially cervical cancer rates

The adjusted VE against any influenza-associated hospitalization was 34.5% overall, including 58.7% among persons with comorbidities, 39.0% among young children, and 31.2% among older adults

Vaccinations contribute to herd immunity, which protects those who cannot be vaccinated, such as infants and individuals with weakened immune systems. A lower rate of disease is positive for the economy because sick people can’t work as often or as hard as healthy people do.

Despite overwhelming scientific evidence, vaccine misinformation persists, and now it’s centered on the incoming Presidential administration, specifically from RFK Jr. and surrounding the widely debunked lie that vaccines cause autism.

While Kennedy has denied on several occasions that he is anti-vaccination and said he and his children are vaccinated, he has repeatedly stated widely debunked claims about vaccine harm.

One of his main false claims - repeated in a 2023 interview with Fox News, was that “autism comes from vaccines”.

This theory was popularised by discredited UK doctor Andrew Wakefield.

But Wakefield's 1998 study was later retracted by the Lancet medical journal. Multiple studies since, across many countries, have concluded there is no link between vaccines and autism.

Wakefield, who authored the initial study that claimed there was a link between autism and the MMR vaccine, was at the same time pushing his own new measles vaccine that was standalone and not part of the 3-vaccine combination. He’s nothing but a grifting fraudster who created a phony study so that he could sell his own vaccine.

Vaccines, including the polio vaccine, have revolutionized public health. Their safety and effectiveness are backed by decades of research and real-world success.

As we celebrate the near-eradication of polio, let us continue to advocate for vaccines as the life-saving tools they are—ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.

The Trump Administration’s main objective is to make everyday life functionally worse for Americans. This will help them create the kind of chaos and hardship that dictatorships need the populace focused on so they won’t notice the oligarchs picking their pockets.

Vaccines are safe, they save lives, and there’s zero legitimate reason not to use them.
